Homeschool Day Opportunities in and around Austin

·         Pioneer Farms

Friday, September 9, 2016 from 10AM to 5PM

Most sites will have historical reenactments. It is open to the public and admission is discounted.  Visit http://www.pioneerfarms.org to find out more.

·         Legoland Discovery Center

September 12-16

The cost is $10 plus tax for both adult and children.

The program includes educational workshops that integrate hands on material and activities designed by Legoland and educators.

·         Hill Country Science Mill

Every second Wednesday of the month, Hill Country Science Mill hosts homeschool days with special demonstrations, activities and guests. The museum is open from 10AM to 4PM. The cost is $6 per student. First educator per student is free. Additional adults are $8. No reservation is needed.

·         The Austin Science and Nature Center hosts a monthly homeschool program. The program meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays with two sessions available: 10AM and 12:30PM. Parents and students elect a day on which to attend during registration. Each month is covers a different topic. Classes are 1.5 hours in length.

o   September 19-21- Awesome Amphibians

o   October 24-26, 28- Fossils and Faults

o   November 14-16, 18- Find Out About Fish

o   December 12-14, 16- Astronomy

o   January 23-25, 27- Acid and Bases

o   February 13-15, 17- Bees, Bats and Birds

The cost for students ages 4-12 is $28.50 for the fall semester and $33.75 for the winter semester. This year they have also added a program for 3 year olds that meets for one hour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Parents are required to remain with the participant. The 3 year old class is $19 for the fall semester and $19 for the winter semester. Registration is available online. A waiver is required.

The Austin Public Library- Faulk Central location hosts a Homeschool Storylab on Wednesdays at 2PM starting September 14, 2016. The program explores a different scientific idea each week, related books and stories as well as a hands-on science project. The program is recommended for ages 5-10, but parent-child activities for younger brothers and sisters are available.

The Austin Zoo is hosting homeschool day on Friday, September 23, 2016 from 9:30AM to 3:30PM. Join other homeschooling families in a day of STEAM learning and exploration with activities from partner organizations, keeper talks and a special education animal presentation will be featured. Featured partnered organizations include the Thinkery, MathHappens, Lone Star Music School, KidsSight Vision Screening Dripping Springs Lions Club, Lion Star Lions Eyebank, Fun with Chemistry University of Texas Chemistry Department, UTEX Culture of Algae Collection, UT Undergraduate Women in Physics, Freshman Research Initiative, Dr Greg Clark of the University of Texas, Texas Memorial Museum and Austin Zoo Sleuths Family Caper. Entrance to the zoo is $5 per person. Train rides are $2 per train ride. Registration is required and is available online. Email lauren.austinzoo@gmail.com with questions.

The Houston Zoo is hosting “Eco Experiments” on September 15, 2016 from 10AM to 1:15PM. Participate in science fun and engage with experiments. Students will partake in hands-on investigations and deepen their understanding of the scientific process. Get ready to test your hypothesis!

They will also be hosting “Student as Field Researchers” on October 5, 2016 from 9:30AM to 1:30PM in partnership with the Nature Conservancy at the Texas City Prairie Preserve. Be prepared to get dirty and wet with this interactive day that allows students to get a firsthand look at a field researcher’s life. Activities include testing techniques to determine the health of an endangered coastal prairie ecosystem

The Houston Zoo is hosting “Scavenger Hunt Safari” on November 8, 2016 from 10AM to 1:15PM. The zoo will provide students with the means to connect with animals and create memories through various stations. Ready to discover them all?

Fort Worth Zoo is hosting homeschool day on October 6, 2016.

Learn amazing facts from zookeepers with more than 20 wild encounters.

The Houston Space Center is hosting homeschool day on October 6, 2016. Homeschooling families will experience space science through innovative, exclusive activities and special guest speakers. Participants will meet a NASA astronaut and hear from the NASA Johnson Space Center about numerous topics including being homeschooled! Learn about robotics, recent industry developments; learn through hands on activities and more. Visit the Houston Space Center for more information and to register.

The Texas Renaissance Festival will be hosting school days on November 1, 2016 and November 2, 2016 from 8:30AM to 4:00PM. Tickets are $9. All public, private and homeschool educators and students are invited to participate in this fun filled 16th century European village. Students will interact with hundreds of costumed characters representing the courts, culture, art, science and literature from the Renaissance Period.
